High Arches Q&A

Find the answer to your questions about high arches below.

  • What Are High Arches?

Also referred to as cavus foot, high arches usually do not touch the ground when you walk. While less common than fallen arches, high arches can be just as debilitating. In the most serious cases, they can even lead to bone or nerve problems, or conditions such as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and hammertoe.

  • What Causes High Arches

While the most common cause of high arches is genetic predisposition, they can also be a symptom of a more serious problem. Some of the conditions that can lead to high arches include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, stroke, polio, muscular dystrophy, and spinal cord tumors.

  • What are the Symptoms of High Arches?

High arches place pressure on the area of the feet between the toes and ankles. This often causes the heels to tilt inward, and may lead to instability. This, in turn, is not just painful but can increase the risk of ankle strains and sprains.

  • Are There Things I Can Do at Home for High Arches?

Other than wearing a pair of quality orthotics, there are a number of things you can do to alleviate the discomfort of high arches. While this is only a short-term solution, over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen, can provide both pain relief and alleviate inflammation. Alternatively, applying an ice pack to the affected area for 10 to 20 minutes at a time can also be a great way of relieving pain.

Exercises for High Arches

Foot pain can be debilitating. Doing stretching and strengthening exercises at home can go a long way to alleviating the pain of high arches. Here are just a few moves to set you on the right path.

  • Toe Curls

Sit upright on a chair with a towel on the floor in front of you. Place your feet flat on the towel. Pull the towel towards your body by curling your toes before pushing it back. Repeat 10 times on each side.

  • Calf Stretches

Stand facing a wall with the right leg in front of the left and your hands on the wall at eye level for support. Bend your right leg at the knee until you feel a stretch in the calf of your left leg. Hold this position for around 30 seconds before switching sides. Repeat 3 times.

  • Towel Stretch

Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Wrap a towel around the balls of your feet and toes, and pull it towards you with both hands. Be sure to keep your legs straight throughout the exercise. Hold this position for around 20 minutes before releasing. Repeat 3 times.

  • Heel Raises

Stand on the edge of a step with your heels in the air. Your weight should be on the balls of your feet. Hold a wall or a banister for support. Slowly lift your heels up until you find yourself standing on your toes before lowering your heels down as far as possible. Repeat this move 10 times.
